Tips for remote team management

Managing teams is an important aspect of any successful business and as we now work remote, managing a team is an even greater imperative. For remote working to actually work and be productive, the right processes and structures need to be in place to get it right.

For the second installment in our working remote series I am suggesting four key areas to keep in mind as remote working has become the normal part of our business.

Build Team Trust 

You cannot function properly if you’re not able to keep in regular contact with your team, so a strong communication system is essential for a remote setup to be a success. Whether you schedule regular calls or use apps for video meetups, any scheduled team meeting must be treated as seriously as if it were an in the office. 

Another essential part of ensuring a strong working relationship with your now remote colleagues is setting clear parameters from the start. With our team we establish clear deliverables that are manageable and in line with what would be expected on-site.

Prioritize Security 

Security is even more important when working remotely and accessing company networks and data. We use company equipment and company procedures and do not deviate from established security measures.

Nurture Team Relationships 

There are a couple of key ways to ensure that our team works and performs together, those keys include:

Regular Meetings
We arrange regular meetings and stay in frequent contact with one another. We also vary the meeting type between voice and video call so as to add a little variety into the mix.

Create a Social Media Culture
Never underestimate the power of social. A strong social media presence makes everyone a part of the team. Making this a core part of our business, enables everyone at RStor to represent the brand virtually, wherever they may be.

Group Video Calls
Video drives engagement and when used in the right way, it can help our teams and partners feel much more part of the business. We utilize multiple ways of supporting our team to ensure they are fully connected and that we can reach each other when/if we need to, despite not being in the same physical space.

Celebrate Successes
Don’t forget to celebrate success. For those running an Agile process this should be a natural occurrence and in any other case it should be a part of the regular team meetings. Celebrate each persons great work in achieving milestones.

Utilize Productivity Tools 

Working on a project that involves multiple team members, or doing research on our competitors, a team of any size can grind to a halt with emails being used to share various versions, updates and drafts that are all in multiple inboxes and hard-drives, and people can easily work off the wrong, older version in the confusion. This is even more of a problem when you’re not necessarily in direct contact with remote team members and so it is even more important to make use of the many collaboration tools on the market. These tools are specifically designed to make work processes quicker, more effective and less likely to result in an error. Some examples for you to consider for your communication stack are:

  • Slack
  • Dropbox
  • Box
  • OneNote
  • Teams
  • Zoom
  • Tweetdeck and Hootsuite (for social media)
